HIRTL Winery: Where tradition and modernity meet

About the HIRTL winery

Welcome to the HIRTL winery, where tradition and modernity meet harmoniously. Our winery is located in Poysdorf in the picturesque Weinviertel and is run by a new generation of winemakers. Our wines are characterized by freshness and fine fruity varietal character, which we refer to as the typical Weinviertel style. The leading variety in our wine-growing region is the classic Grüner Veltliner, which stands for strictly tested quality and regional varietal characteristics under the designation Weinviertel DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus). Visit us and experience the typical Weinviertel style!

History and Philosophy

The HIRTL winery looks back on a history spanning almost 300 years. The first records of winegrowing in our family date back to 1729. Martin and Andrea Hirtl have been running the business since 2001 and conscientiously cultivate over 20 hectares of vineyards according to the most modern standards. The tradition and knowledge from the long history of the Poysdorf estate are combined with advanced know-how to set new quality standards.

For us, winegrowing means not only caring for our vines, but also treating nature with respect. We therefore focus on natural production without herbicides and insecticides, moderate pruning, leaf work and grape thinning to ensure optimum grape quality. Our main variety is Grüner Veltliner, which grows on more than 50% of our cultivation area. Other white wine varieties include Welschriesling, Gelber Muskateller, Weißburgunder, Chardonnay and Riesling. In the red wine range, we offer Zweigelt, Merlot and Blauburger.

Our wines

White wines:

  • Green Valtellina
  • Chardonnay
  • Yellow Muscat
  • Welschriesling
  • Riesling
  • Pinot Blanc

Red wines:

  • Zweigelt
  • Merlot
  • Blueburger

Our wines are produced on soils that are optimally tailored to the needs of the respective grape varieties. The Kirchberg with its loose loess soil and light gravel is one of our top locations for Grüner Veltliner. Chardonnay thrives best on soils with sufficient water retention and a higher lime content, while Zweigelt prefers deep, nutrient-rich soils on south-facing sites.

Wine quality and cellar work

Quality is created in the vineyard, but is perfected in the cellar. Martin Hirtl attaches great importance to variety-specific processing in order to preserve the typical character of each grape. This sensitivity is crucial for bringing the wide range of special features of our region into the bottle.
